miniDVD vs miniDV 1 - miniDVD camcorders don't produce standard DV but instead do the encoding internally and output MPEG2 onto the DVD. This saves time but also makes it worse if you WANT to do editing and encoding on a PC to MPEG2 with any options (or even to MPEG4, DivX, etc.) If all you have to work with is MPEG2 coming out of the camcorder, you will find that this is already lossily compressed and any editing will result in further loss of details. MiniDV and D8 camcorders output the full quality DV stream over Firewire and record it onto tape. Ok, it's large (13GB/hour) but this conveys 5 times the data that is on a full size DVD video disk (encoded with MPEG2) which you can easily make from the raw DV. If you only have the MPEG2 coming out of the camcorder or on a small (mini) DVD disk, then you can't "go back" to the raw DV in it's full quality. 2 - the miniDVD that they record upon is NOT that compatable with existing stand-alone DVD players. Make sure your player can physically fit it and handle the type. 3 - Higher cost of media, and you can't mix types that the camcorder is made to use. If you use DVD-R media (cheapest), it is the most compatable, but you can't erase and reuse it. If you use DVD-RW (does this exist for mini camcorders?) you find that not as many DVD players can read DVD-RW. Likewise if you use DVD+RW. The most robust and secure erasable DVD format is DVD-RAM, but it is very rare to find a DVD player that can play these (Panasonics do, but few others). 4 - Limited recording time/quality since you are NOT using a full size DVD blank, you must choose low bitrates to get a decent recording time onto the miniDVD disk. 5 - Low availability of the miniDVD disks where you can find miniDV tapes at any "tourist trap". 6 - Battery life is usually shorter in mini DVD recording camcorders and better in the miniDV and Digital8 tape camcorders. ------------------------------------------- Well there is huge difference in terms of quality between DV and DVD. You might think that DVD is really high quality but imagine, the capacity of DVD is 4.7 Gigabyte which can hold 1hr 30minutes of video. A 17 minute miniDV video size is 4 Gigabyte. Now you can image how much differece is there in quality between the two media. MiniDVs are used by professional camcorders too which costs more than £4000. You can get near to broadcast quality in MiniDV depending on the camcorder you use. DV records uncompressed videos and DVD compresses the video to fit on 4.7GB disk.
