Japanese and Korean manufacturers are and probably will continue to be Europe's fastest growing players, according to ACEA, the European motor vehicle manufacturers association.

The Japanese and Koreans are now averaging 17 percent and could capture 20 percent of the market in western Europe by 2010, analysts say.

Toyota and Lexus topped the Japanese list with a combined share of 4.6% and expects to achieve a share of 8% as part of its '2010 Global Vision' strategy to become the world's largest automaker. Toyota is adding capacity in its plants in the U.K., France and Turkey and aims to achieve European sales of 1.2 million in 2010. Last year the company sold around 800,000 units in Europe.

Hyundai was the top Korean manufacturer with a share of 1.8 percent. Hyundai is adding a plant in Slovakia.
