Unveiled at the 2007 Frankfurt Motor Show, V6 dCi Concept offers a foretaste of the new generation of 3.0-litre V6 diesel engines designed for the brand’s high end vehicles.
Developed within the Renault-Nissan Alliance, V6 dCi Concept demonstrates Renault’s determination to extend its line-up of engines with a product which is both high-performance and refined.
Totally dedicated to driving pleasure, it develops an outstanding power output of 195kW, a wide range of engine speeds peaking at 5,200rpm and a punchy maximum torque of 550Nm at 1,750rpm. The engine has also been developed to set a new standard in terms of acoustic comfort.
By fitting V6 dCi Concept with a particulate filter and a nitrogen oxide processing system (NOx trap), Renault combines high performance with respect for the environment. In fact, V6 dCi Concept complies with Euro VI and US standards.
V6 dCi Concept is combined with a Proactive, automatic 6-speed gearbox.

Renault unveils a brand-new V6 diesel engine at the Frankfurt Motor Show, in the form of a concept engine dubbed “V6 dCi Concept”. Developed within the Renault-Nissan Alliance, this new engine, available at several power output levels, will be available on New Laguna and Renault’s high end vehicles of the future. The new 2,993cc block is derived from the 2.0 dCi engine, with which it shares 25% of its components. The engine has been designed so as to be particularly compact, in order that it may be installed in the engine compartment of New Laguna whilst also meeting regulatory requirements related to pedestrian protection.

V6 dCi Concept develops a mighty 195kW (265hp) at 4,000rpm and has a maximum torque of 550Nm at 1,750rpm.


Supreme driving pleasure

When it comes to driving pleasure, this brand new V6 dCi engine has been built with the most demanding of drivers in mind. To meet their expectations, the engine design makes use of state-of-the-art technology for high-performance diesel engines.
V6 dCi Concept fuel injection system uses high-pressure common rail injection technology, with two rails pressurized at 1800 bar, which supply 7-hole piezo-electric injectors. This configuration supports up to five injections per cycle, ensuring high quality fuel combustion and optimum acoustic comfort.
V6 dCi Concept also includes a variable geometry turbocharger, which generates a high level of torque even at very low revs and delivers a satisfying level of versatility, regardless of the engine speed.

The architecture of the exhaust manifolds has been meticulously designed to limit load losses and ensure that the maximum amount of energy is delivered to the turbine. With a maximum torque of 1,750Nm at 3,500rpm, the engine accelerates powerfully and smoothly. The sense of power can be constantly felt, right up to the 5,000rpm mark, in much the same way as on the 2.0 dCi engine, recognized as the standard bearer in its category in terms of engine speed.
So-called “ultra-fast” ceramic technology glow plugs enable almost instantaneous preheating and cold starting.
Lastly, the specific work carried out on calibrating the ECU, combined with an electronic accelerator, means that the engine responds immediately every time the accelerator pedal is pressed.

Refined noise levels

The technical solutions have been chosen to ensure a level of acoustic comfort to rival the best in the six-cylinder diesel engine market. Extensive work has been carried out to minimize noise levels during startup, at idle and at even engine speeds. Meticulous attention was paid to the processing of noises such as rumbling (measured at around 250Hz), engine presence (around 500Hz) and combustion noise.
The CGI (Compacted Graphite Iron) engine block, combined with a design which incorporates extensive ribbing in the vibration-sensitive areas and a large coupling surface with the gearbox, contributes to the stiffness of the powertrain unit.
One of the common reasons for purchasing a 6-cylinder engine resides in the appealing noise they make. V6 dCi Concept breaks new ground in delivering high-performance and driving pleasure, offering drivers a quiet ride at steady engine speeds and a tellingly powerful and resonant tone when they up the revs.

An environmentally-respectful engine

This new engine comes with a full range of state-of-the-art emission control technology.
The 2,993cc V6 dCi engine targets CO2 emissions of less than 200g/km.
The engine’s air intake ducts have been specially designed to increase combustion speed inside the cylinders by swirling the air in the cylinders. This is known as the swirl effect.

Some of the exhaust gases are immediately recovered as they exit the combustion chamber and re-injected into the air intake, so as to process polluting emissions as early as possible in the system.
The quantity of exhaust gases recirculated is controlled by an EGR (Exhaust Gas Recirculation) valve. Before entering the valve, the gases pass through a cooling device, which is made more efficient by a specific air/water intercooler. This Renaultpatented device contributes to overall environmental performance of the engine.
V6 dCi Concept introduces a new nitrogen oxide processing system, known as NOx trap. Alongside the catalytic converter, this device is located on the exhaust line between the turbocharger and the particulate filter.
The engine is also fitted with a maintenance-free, periodic regeneration particulate filter, which operates thanks to a seventh injector located upstream of the filter.
Regeneration occurs automatically, with no need for intervention from the user. V6 dCi Concept complies with Euro VI and US standards and will comply with the pollution levels outlined in Euro V regulations when it goes on sale at the end of 2008.
The various production versions of the V6 dCi will also be compatible with the use of B30 bio-diesel.

V6 dCi Concept is combined with the AJ0 automatic, flickshift 6-speed gearbox. This type of gearbox puts the emphasis on fluidity and smoothness, without sacrificing any punch or torque pick-up. The AJ0 gearbox features a three-shaft structure and is also fitted with a cable control. Extensive work was carried out on the quality of its gear changes and on reducing mechanical friction, in an effort to ensure user comfort and contribute to lower fuel consumption.
The combination of the V6 dCi with this gearbox ensures that the engine’s power and torque can be fully exploited.
The engine is also equipped with two timing chains which improve reliability and durability. The engine was penned using the “Design to quality” approach, a method successfully adopted on recent Renault engines, to ensure it reaches best-in-class quality and reliability levels as soon as it goes on sale. Its servicing interval is set at 2 years, or every 30,000km.

The production version of V6 dCi Concept will be manufactured at Renault’s Cléon plant, in Normandy. This facility is Renault’s top powertrain plant, worldwide, in terms of production volumes. The site has a production capacity of 60,000 V6 dCi engines per year. The Cléon plant currently handles 30% of the group’s powertrain production. It manufactured over 650,000 engines and close to 700,000 gearboxes in 2006.
