Toyota Ranks Highest in Retaining New-Vehicle Buyers

Resale Value and Dealership Service Cited as Key Contributors to Retention

WESTLAKE VILLAGE, Calif.: 6 December 2006 — Toyota leads the automotive industry in retaining the highest percentage of new-vehicle purchasers, according to the J.D. Power and Associates 2006 Customer Retention StudySM released today.

Now in its fourth year, the study measures the percentage of new-vehicle buyers and lessees who replace a previously purchased new vehicle with another from the same nameplate. As a whole, the industry registers a slight decline in customer retention, falling to 47.9 percent, from 49.6 percent in 2005.

The study finds that of more than one-half of the brands included in the rankings have shown some decline in retention rates since the study’s inception in 2003.

“Declining customer loyalty results from considerable improvements in quality combined with a plethora of choices for consumers,” said Neal Oddes, director of product research and analysis at J.D. Power and Associates. “In some instances, new models, such as those in the rapidly growing crossover segment, can have a significant impact on customer retention for a brand.”

With a 1.3 percentage-point improvement from 2005, Toyota (63.9%) replaces Lexus (63.2%) in the customer retention rankings. Toyota benefits from its reputation for exceeding customer expectations in terms of both short-term and long-term quality, which has helped to maintain the high resale value of its vehicles, as well as to expand its customer base. Honda retains its third-place ranking at 60.3 percent.

BMW, improving nearly 7 percentage points from last year, jumps six places to rank fourth at 56.5 percent. This gain, according to the study, can be mostly attributed to improved customer service stemming from BMW’s introduction of a free vehicle maintenance policy for new purchasers.

Bolstered by a 15 percentage-point increase from 2005, Suzuki achieves the largest gain in customer retention among all brands with a 23 percentage-point overall gain since the study’s inception in 2003. Several factors contribute to Suzuki’s improving loyalty rates, including improved short- and long-term quality, as well as the introduction of new models with better customer appeal. Suzuki customers are also often offered attractive purchase incentives.

Also registering robust three-year gains are Nissan, advancing 8.2 percentage points from 2003, and Lexus, which gains 7.7 percentage points.

“During the past four years, Nissan has had a remarkable turnaround in image and financial performance, due in part to stepped-up quality initiatives and improved resale values,” Oddes said. “The benefit of this is that the brand is retaining more of its customers than it did in 2003, which is helping turn around its financial performance.”

Also worth noting is Cadillac, which, through quality improvements and a breadth of products, has achieved an increase in customer retention rates each year since 2003.

The 2006 Customer Retention Study is based on responses from 138,630 new-vehicle buyers and lessees, of which 82,274 replaced a vehicle that was previously acquired new.




Deci asta e un sondaj de opinie care sa vada cit % din actualii clienti care si-au cumparat masina de noua...isi vor inlocui masina cu o alta masina noua de la aceeasi firma.

Interesant este ca Toyota/Lexus sint amindoua in top (ceea ce este de asteptat). Dar care e vraja cu Honda si Nissan (care sint peste media pe industrie) respectiv Acura si Infinity care sint cu mult sub media pe industrie ? Respectiv AUDI si VW care sint amindoua sub media pe industrie ? Scion - tot Toyota - este si el tot peste medie. Subaru prostanac el dar vad ca o scoate in fata la multe marci mult mai sonore si este peste media pe industrie. Nu ma surprinde rating-ul de la Ford si Chevrolet - DAR cred ca e totusi un rating artificial deoarece cred ca include vinzarile la volum: fleet cars pt. car rental agencies, police departments, taxi companies, etc.

La fel de surprinzatoare este pozitia kia...o pozitie extrem de buna pentru o firma care creste de la an la an.

Prea multe ciudatenii in tabelul asta... In primul rand ne obisnuisem ca Mercedesul sa fie in fundul clasamentului... iar mazda pe la inceputul lui.. acum e invers... la fel de surprinzatoare e situarea infiniti si acura... pe la fund.

Eu zic ca ar trebui sa analizam si psihologic acest tabel:
- posesorii de marci "near premium" din america (audi, acura, infiniti, saab, volvo) nu isi vor mai cumpara marci "near premium" pentru ca probabil isi doresc un porsche 911.
- posesorii de mercedes (aia care au mai ramas) sunt deja prea batrani ca sa mai schimbe marca.
- Cei cu mazda (care e un fel de upper-mid-class vehicle) s-au mai instarit si vor sa treaca fie la "near premium" fie la "premium".
- Cei care au cumparat scion au fost si au ramas niste retardati.
- O parte din cei cu porsche vor sa treaca la ferrari/lambo/aston - restul de 46.5% vor sa isi cumpere un porsche adevarat (probabil momentan au boxster sau cayene si vor sa treaca la 911).

Cu alte cuvinte, tabelul nu prea are legatura cu calitatile intrinseci ale masinii, ci mai mult cu situatia financiara

Am prieteni care-si cumpara urmarind tabelele astea ceea ce cred ca este o foarte mare porcarie.

Intrebarea e retorica sau cum ? Chiar trebuie sa explic ? Mult mai corecta mi s-ar fi parut formularea "Ce naiba poate sa iti placa la masina asta ?" adica prin comparatie loganul pare o capodopera, iar multipla si roomster par cool de tot. Poate doar rodiusul sa intreaca aceasta masina.

Scion este una dintre cele mai bine vazute masini pe aici...si partea frumoasa este ca sint atit de "customizable" din fabrica...incit nu prea e nevoie sa apelezi la piese aftermarket. Toyota va pune absolut tot ce vrei pe ea, inclusiv modificari la motor, si ai garantie de fabrica.

Daca matale nu ai asa ceva la dispozitie, nu inseamna ca trebuie sa le jignesti alegerile altora. Ca matale esti ala cu 2 masini premium AUDI fwd nu eu.

Si tu ti-ai mai dat recent un avertisment. La doua avertismente, ai ban. Citeste regulamentul. Astept cu interes sporit sa te propui pentru un ban, eu sugerez de 3 zile.

Scionul tC este o masina chiar frumoasa
xA si xB pot sa fie super customizabile dar tot urate vor fi.
Eu chiar sunt bucuros ca ambele vor fi inlocuite incepand de anul viitor.
Si ca atare voi atasa o poza cu tC-ul.

Halba, ai amestecat scioanele biggrin.gif . xB e in stilul masinilor japoneze cubice de la mama lor (urita), xA e o chestie mititica dar nu e groaznica si tC (am doi prieteni care o au) e o masina cit se poate de draguta. Are si cteva detalii interesante: trapa pe toata latimea acoperisului, scaunele se pliaza si podeaua devine complet plata, poti sa dormi in ea sau sa cari mobila smile.gif. E una din cele mai reusite combinatii de sportivitate (are 160CP si se misca decet) cu practicalitate. Am vrut sa o iau dar trebuie sa astepti (e cererea mare, si nu aveam masina) si mai ales eu nu incapeam in masina asta pe locul soferului, e construita ciudat.
Oricum nimeni nu-si ia masina asta daca nu-l atrage cu ceva asa ca designul iese din discutie.

Oricum masinile Toyotei sunt cele mai vandute masini in SUA.
Adevarul ca si Porsche, Audi, Mercedes si BMW sunt mai vandute aici ca si in UE.
Deocamdata piata americana de masini este cea mai mare din lume cu aprox. 16.5 milioane de unitati NOI vandute anual urmata de China cu 7mil. apoi e UE cu 6mil.
In urmatorii 10-15 ani China va fi prima.

Sincer eu stiam doar de scionurile alea cubice (xA si xB) care arata groaznic. Desigur cam toate marcile au cate un model urat (Q7, X3, R-class, roomster, cayene, multipla, ar fi cateva exemple) dar cand toata gama (sau ma rog, 2/3 din gama) arata groaznic... indoielile mele despre sanatatea mintala a cumparatorilor acelei marci mi se par justificate.

The limited-edition, tuner-developed M3 is the perennially popular high-performance model in BMW’s 3-Series line. A fanatical following and legendary performance mean that used M3s command premium prices. About $49,000 to $56,500.

5. Lexus RX
Among the top SUVs in Consumer Reports Ratings, the RX is plush, quiet, and comfortable while providing better-than-average reliability and good crash-test results. The RX400h hybrid is among the most fuel-efficient SUVs we’ve tested. $36,000 to $46,000.

6. BMW 6-Series
Available as a coupe or convertible, the 6-Series is based on the 5-Series platform. But its more limited production helps keep its resale value high. $72,000 to $79,000.

7. Lexus GX
A different SUV from the Lexus RX, the GX is a traditional truck-based, off-road-ready vehicle. It has above-average reliability, a well-appointed interior, and good frontal offset crash-test results. But resale values might not continue to hold up as well for the GX as demand softens for body-on-frame, V8-powered SUVs. $46,500.

8. Acura TSX ( Accord european care se tine la fel de bine si in preferintele britanicilor)
Providing a nice balance of sportiness and comfort, the well-rounded TSX provides above-average reliability, good crash-test results, and a long list of standard safety equipment. $28,000 to $30,000.

9. Scion xA
The small xA hatchback looks much different from the larger xB but shares its low price, good reliability, and excellent 30-mpg fuel economy. $13,000 to $13,500.

10. Honda Civic & Civic Hybrid
A longtime Consumer Reports recommended model, the Civic offers outstanding reliability, good fuel economy, and good crash-test results. While the Hybrid version returned an excellent 36 mpg overall in our tests, even regular Civics do well in our fuel-economy tests, with 29 mpg for the automatic. $14,500 to $24,500.


Bottom 10

1. Ford Freestar
The unrefined Freestar is among the lowest rated minivans tested by Consumer Reports and has had below-average reliability of late. Resale values of the Freestar are likely to speed up their slide following Ford's recent announcement to discontinue production. $19,500 to $29,500.

2. Ford Crown Victoria
This large sedan is an example of how fleet sales can lower resale values. As a perennial favorite of rental companies, police departments, and cabbies, the Crown Victoria can't hold its value in spite of good crash-test results and decent reliability. $24,500 to $27,500.

3. Buick Rainier
With just 690 units sold in August '06 compared with 12,901 of its Chevrolet TrailBlazer sibling, the Rainier SUV gets the double whammy of costing more money and depreciating faster. $31,500 to $33,500.

4. Lincoln Town Car
A recent Consumer Reports study found the venerable Town Car (last redesigned for 1998) to have the most generous incentives of any vehicle on the market. An old design with heavy discounts is not a good combination for resale. $42,000 to $50,500.

5. Dodge Caravan/Grand Caravan
These minivans are rated midpack in Consumer Reports testing, below newer and better models. The heavily discounted, aging Caravan remains a strong seller in the category, probably contributing to an oversupply. $18,500 to $27,500.

6. Mercury Grand Marquis
The Grand Marquis is a twin of the Ford Crown Victoria, sharing its dated, 20th-century design. Like the Ford, it has had average reliability and good crash-test results, but it’s at the bottom of Consumer Reports’ large-sedan test ratings. $25,000 to $29,500.

7. GMC Envoy
Like the Buick Rainier, the Envoy is a twin of the Chevrolet TrailBlazer. Both the Envoy and TrailBlazer are among the lowest-performing midsized SUVs in Consumer Reports’ test Ratings in addition to unimpressive crash test results and poor reliability. $26,500 to $37,000.

8. Ford Explorer
The high-volume Ford Explorer has a history of poor depreciation that is expected to continue, despite a freshening for 2006. The midlife update did reduce noise levels from both powertrains, as well as improve interior fit and finish. $26,500-$36,000.

9. Buick Rendezvous
Derived from GM’s minivans, this SUV has had average reliability but mediocre performance in our tests. It will be discontinued by the end of 2006. $25,000 to $28,500.

10. Chrysler Town & Country
This minivan is a twin of the Dodge Grand Caravan, and shares the Dodge’s below-average reliability and midpack Ratings in Consumer Reports tests. $21,500 to $36,000.


deci xB-urile second sunt greu de gasit si isi tin valoarea foarte bine... lumea este nebuna in America si Canada dupa produsele Toyota... e greu de explicat dar asta e adevarul... daca te uiti si la cifrele de vanzari an de an, Toyota merge inainte... cand o sa se opreasca si de ce vom vedea...

ultimele zece ca devalorizare isi cam merita soarta.

numai xB e cubic... iar cumparatorii sunt in special din grupa de varsta 16-24 de ani.

aici trebuie sa te contrazic...

1) In Euro de Vest ( 26 tari incluzand Elvetia si Norvegia care nu sunt membre UE; fara Malta si Cipru care chiar nu cred ca ar conta aici in vreun fel) se vand 15-15.5mil de masini anual aproape la fel de multe ca in USA. desigur aceste tari au o populatie de 450mil de locuitori, USA abia a sarit de 300mil.

2) in primele 10 luni 2006 BMW a vandut 546800 masini pe piata europeana; Mercedes 588700; Audi 529800

3) in primele 11 luni vanzarile pe piata americana au fost BMW 243000, Mercedes 219800 si Audi 78200.

4) nu am gasit date pentru Porsche in Europa. In USA in primele 11 luni au vandut 31400 masini iar productia totala este pe la 96000 masini anual. este posibil ca tarile vest-europene sa stea mai bine si la acest capitol.

daca stai sa calculezi cate modele are fiecare din aceste firme pe piata europeana, si cate pe piata nord-americana, (+diferenta de populatie) ajungi la concluzia ca tot in america se vand mai bine.
