TOYOTA RELEASES ANNUAL ENVIRONMENTAL REPORT AND AGENDA

In January, Toyota Motor Corporation President Katsuaki Watanabe announced a wide-ranging environmental agenda in response to the company's sustainable mobility vision. At the same time, Toyota released its 2007 North America Environmental Report, describing progress toward goals set forth in Toyota's 2007–2011 Environmental Action Plan.

In a keynote speech delivered at the North American International Auto Show in Detroit, Watanabe announced several environmental initiatives focused on new product releases.

He announced that Toyota will supply plug-in hybrids to commercial customers by 2010. President Watanabe said, "As part of this plan, we will deliver a significant fleet of PHEVs powered by lithium-ion batteries to a wide variety of global commercial customers, with many coming to the U.S."

To make that happen, Toyota has already started the planning phase to expand its Panasonic® joint-venture battery factory. The expansion will add an assembly line to build lithium batteries for automotive applications.

Watanabe also confirmed that a new clean diesel V8 engine will be offered in both the Tundra full-size pickup and the Sequoia SUV in the near future.

At the Detroit show, Watanabe revealed the [color="#0080d1"]A-BAT hybrid compact pickup (see photo). He also invited the media to attend next year's NAIAS, where Toyota will stage the world premieres of two all-new, dedicated hybrids, one for Toyota and one for Lexus. "These two introductions will move us closer to our goal of selling a million hybrids per year in the next decade," he said.

Environmental Report Released
Some of the goals outlined in Toyota's 2007 North America Environmental Report are to promote the development of technologies to achieve best-in-class fuel-efficiency performance; introduce vehicle technologies that support diversification of energy and fuel resources; promote the development of clean-energy vehicles and ensure wide acceptance; promote initiatives to reduce traffic congestion; reduce CO₂ emitted from North American operations; and reduce the company's production of waste and water consumption.

Here are a few highlights from the report:

• The dealership building that houses Pat Lobb Toyota in McKinney, Texas, received a silver LEED certification from the U.S. Green Building Council. It became the first automotive dealership in the United States to achieve green building certification. Several other LEED projects are under development at Toyota dealerships across the United States.
• In Canada, the 2007 EnerGuide named the Toyota Yaris the most fuel-efficient subcompact, the Toyota Prius the most fuel-efficient midsize, and the Toyota Sienna the most fuel-efficient minivan. Canadians who buy fuel-efficient vehicles are eligible for a federal rebate of up to CAN$2000. The Canadian Automobile Association presented the Pyramid Award™ for Environmental Initiatives to Toyota Canada for the 2007 Camry Hybrid; the Automobile Journalists Association of Canada also named the Camry Hybrid its top passenger car for 2007. One of every five Camrys sold in Canada is a hybrid.
• For the 2007 model year, 90 percent of all Toyota, Lexus and Scion cars are certified as ULEV (ultra low emission vehicle) or better. Some new Toyota engines employ direct injection, a technique that increases efficiency and reduces exhaust emissions.
• Toyota is on track to meet its five-year target for reducing VOCs from body painting operations. At the new plant in San Antonio, Texas, vehicle bodies are painted with a waterborne primer and basecoat. At the vehicle assembly plant in Fremont, California, painting bumpers with a water-based primer has contributed to a 50 percent reduction in VOC emissions over the last two years.
• Toyota North America introduced soy oil-based polyurethane foam for passenger seats in both the Corolla and the Lexus RX. The use of soy in seat foams lowers the amount of petroleum used for production and reduces the carbon footprint of each vehicle.
• Toyota's U.S. sales headquarters and its parts distribution center in Los Angeles were joint winners of California's 2006 Waste Reduction Awards Program of the Year award. This distinguishes Toyota as one of California's top five models for waste management. Together, the two locations were able to divert more than 4.6 million pounds of material from landfills.
• Toyota's Canadian sales headquarters office has a target to reduce paper consumption by 25 percent per person by 2010. Recycling a stack of newspapers three feet (one meter) high saves one tree.
• Toyota continues to expand its lineup of remanufactured service parts. In Fiscal Year 2007, the company launched 166 remanufactured parts applications. Remanufactured parts are now highlighted on the Toyota Wholesale Parts Web site at toyotapartsandservice.com.
